The moon, or rather the bright light of the moon, gave name to this beautiful spot, according to the legend.

Probably, the name MondSeeLAnd region derives from the Latin word Lunaelacus: luna - the moon, lacus - the lake.

For sure, the spelling of the words has changed a lot of time over the centuries.

Regardless of how time influenced the name, some things have not changed at all about Mondsee:

The baroque Hl. Michael basilica is not only famous for its Guggenbichler altar. The moving story of the Trapp family and the Sound of Music also contributed to the international fame of the basilica.

A highlight not to be missed: the "Mondseer Jedermann" by Hugo von Hofmannsthal in Upper Austrian dialect!
